About this album

Christmas was celebrated with particular splendour in the churches and court chapels of seventeenth-century Lutheran Germany. This attractive programme draws together a wide variety of Schüt' choral motets and dialogues to form an alternative Christmas story. As Schüt wrote no purely instrumental music, the sonatas and canzonas are by his associates and pupils. The two virtuosic canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli are double-choir works with pairs of violins and cornetts supported by trumpets; the Usper sonara employs the same instrumental forces in a fascinating mixture of old and new sonorities.
