AAM joins Choir of King's College, Cambridge at the Concertgebouw
On 4 October the AAM's four-month collaboration with the Choir of King's College, Cambridge performing Monteverdi's Vespers drew to a close with a performance at the prestigious Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
The performance, marking the 400th anniversary of the composition of the Vespers, was greeted by a five-minute standing ovation.
The details surrounding the composition of the Vespers are unclear; but it's probable that the work was written by Monteverdi in an attempt to secure posts in Venice and Rome. Whatever its history, though, one thing is clear: its monumental scale and innovative mix of the sacred and secular make it one of the most important works of western music.
