Andrew Kennedy was born in Ashington, and studied at Kings College, Cambridge and the Royal College of Music in London. He was also a member of the Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden.
Andrew has won numerous prizes and awards including the 2005 BBC Singer of the World Rosenblatt Recital Prize, the 2002 London Handel Competition, the Song Prize in the 2003 Richard Tauber Competition, second prize in the 2004 Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the Queen Elizabeth Rosebowl from the Royal College of Music in recognition of outstanding achievement. He is a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award winner and won the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artists Award in 2006. He was also a member of Radio 3s New Generation Artists Scheme.
He has performed Tamino The Magic Flute, ENO, Flute A Midsummer Nights Dream, Royal Opera House, Jaquino Fidelio, Glyndebourne Festival, Ferrando Cosi fan tutte, Glyndebourne Touring Opera, Nemorino Lelisir damore, Opera North and Tom Rakewell The Rakes Progress, La Monnaie and Opéra de Lyon.
Concert engagements include Jaquino Fidelio, Francesco Benvenuto Cellini, LSO/Sir Colin Davis, Junger Seeman and Hirt Tristan und Isolde, Edinburgh International Festival, Mozart Requiem, London Philharmonic Orchestra/Jurowski, Mozart Mass in C Minor, Hallé Orchestra/Elder and Berlioz Grande Messe de Morts, LSO/Tortelier and at the Royal Albert Hall with the RPO. Recent orchestral performances of Britten include Nocturne with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, (also released with BBC Music Magazine), Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings with the CBSO, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Les Illuminations with the Scottish Ensemble and Oedipus Rex in concert wih the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra at the Edinburgh International Festival. Andrew sang Elgar Spirit of England at the 2007 Last Night of the Proms.
Equally passionate about song repertoire, Andrew gives numerous recitals around Europe and the UK most recently appearing at the Wigmore Hall with Julius Drake, at the Leeds Lieder Festival with Iain Burnside, the Cheltenham Festival with the Aronowitz Ensemble, the Three Choirs Festival with Simon Lepper and at Cadogan Hall for the 2007 BBC Proms with the Nash Ensemble and Edward Gardner. Other performances include the opening recital for the 2005/6 Concertgebouw recital series in Amsterdam with Roger Vignoles and numerous studio recordings for BBC Radio 3.
Andrews BBC recordings include Strauss orchestral songs and Finzis Dies Natalis with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Liszt songs with the BBC Symphony Orchestra/Belohlavek and Mozart and Handel arias with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, alongside recitals of Schubert songs at LSO St. Lukes with Stephen Osborne and Janaceks Diary of One who Vanished at the City of London Festival with Julius Drake. Andrews fast growing discography includes a solo disc of Peter Warlock songs, Judith Weir On Buying a Horse, and Elgar Spirit of England. A solo disc of Vaughan Williams On Wenlock Edge and Gurney Ludlow and Teme is due to be released in January 2008 and he as recently recorded Strauss Songs with Roger Vignoles and a disc of Liszt songs with Iain Burnside both due for release in 2008.
Current and future plans include Novice Billy Budd, London Symphony Orchestra/Harding, Tamino The Magic Flute, ENO, Vere Billy Budd, Houston Grand Opera, Mozart Requiem in London and New York with the LSO/Sir Colin Davis, Elgar Dream of Gerontius, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a recital at the Wigmore Hall.
