James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, and whilst studying and practising medicine began working as a solo singer with many of Britains leading choirs in Britain and abroad. In 1996 he turned to a full-time career in music.
James recent concert appearances include: Bach cantatas plus recording (Bach Collegium Japan), Mozarts Requiem with Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Schubert Mass in E Flat (BBC Wales / Nicholas Kraemer), Israel in Egypt (Norddeutscher Rundfunk), Theodora (Scottish Chamber Orchestra), Judas Maccabeus (The Kings Consort), Monteverdi vespers (Gabrieli Consort), Bach cantatas with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra in their celebrated Bach Pilgrimage (Sir John Eliot Gardiner / Europe America), Messiah (The Sixteen / Japan), Bach Magnificat (The Kings Consort / Spain), St Matthew Passion (Dunedin Consort), world premiere of Knut Nystedts Apocalypsis Joannis (Oslo Philharmonic), world premiere of John Taveners Total Eclipse (Academy of Ancient Music / London), Brittens Gloriana (Philharmonia Orchestra / Richard Hickox), Bach cantatas (Bach Collegium Japan / World Tour), Bach B Minor Mass (Lufthansa Festival / Ivor Bolton), Bach passions (Australian Chamber Orchestra), Berliozs Lenfance Du Christ (Scottish Chamber Orchestra / Richard Hickox), a Britten and Schubert Song recital (BBC Northern Ireland) and performances of music by Howard Ferguson for the composers 90th birthday (BBC Radio 3). He has also appeared in recitals with Malcolm Martineau, Stephen Varcoe and Della Jones.
Operatic performances include: Quint in Brittens Turn of the Screw (New Chamber Opera), Ferrando Cosi Fan Tutte, Scaramuccio in Strauss Ariadne Aud Naxos (Richard Hickox), Gomatz in Mozarts Zaide (Istanbul) and Vaughan Williams Sir John In Love (Barbican / Radio 3).
