James Gilchrist

James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, and whilst studying and practising medicine began working as a solo singer with many of Britain’s leading choirs in Britain and abroad. In 1996 he turned to a full-time career in music.

James recent concert appearances include: Bach cantatas plus recording (Bach Collegium Japan), Mozart’s Requiem with Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Schubert Mass in E Flat (BBC Wales / Nicholas Kraemer), Israel in Egypt (Norddeutscher Rundfunk), Theodora (Scottish Chamber Orchestra), Judas Maccabeus (The King’s Consort), Monteverdi vespers (Gabrieli Consort), Bach cantatas with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra in their celebrated Bach Pilgrimage (Sir John Eliot Gardiner / Europe – America), Messiah (The Sixteen / Japan), Bach Magnificat (The King’s Consort / Spain), St Matthew Passion (Dunedin Consort), world premiere of Knut Nystedt’s Apocalypsis Joannis (Oslo Philharmonic), world premiere of John Tavener’s Total Eclipse (Academy of Ancient Music / London), Britten’s Gloriana (Philharmonia Orchestra / Richard Hickox), Bach cantatas (Bach Collegium Japan / World Tour), Bach B Minor Mass (Lufthansa Festival / Ivor Bolton), Bach passions (Australian Chamber Orchestra), Berlioz’s L’enfance Du Christ (Scottish Chamber Orchestra / Richard Hickox), a Britten and Schubert Song recital (BBC Northern Ireland) and performances of music by Howard Ferguson for the composer’s 90th birthday (BBC Radio 3). Operatic performances include: Quint in Britten’s Turn of the Screw (New Chamber Opera), Ferrando Cosi Fan Tutte, Scaramuccio in Strauss’ Ariadne Aud Naxos (Richard Hickox), Gomatz in Mozart’s Zaide (Istanbul) and Vaughan Williams’ Sir John In Love (Barbican / Radio 3).

Amongst his many recordings are: Bach cantatas plus recording and Mozart Requiem (Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra / Ton Koopman), the title role in Britten Albert Herring (Chandos / Richard Hickox), Rachmaninov vespers (EMI / King’s College, Cambridge), Schütz sacred music (The Sixteen / Collins Classics), Rameau cantatas and St Mark Passion (ASV), Grainger songs (Chandos), Kuhnau sacred music (The King’s Consort / Hyperion), Bach Missa Brevis (Collegium Intsrumentale Brugense) and Bach cantatas (Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra).

Future plans include Bach B Minor Mass at the Teatro Regio Torino and Accademia Santa Cecilia Rome under Bychkov, Messiah (The Sixteen), St John and St Matthew Passions (Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra), St John Passion (Scottish Chamber Orchestra), Bach Magnificat (Academy of Ancient Music / Christopher Hogwood), St Matthew Passion (Dunedin Consort), Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance (Scottish Chamber Orchestra) and Haydn Theresienmesse, Handel L’Allegro with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra.
