About this concert

Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria was one of the most successful operas of its day; premiered during the 1639-1640 carnival season, it was revived just one year later in Venice and performed subsequently as far afield as Bologna. Thereafter, however, it was forgotten until an incomplete manuscript of the original score was published in 1922 and audiences began to rediscover this most moving and tender of Monteverdi’s surviving operas. A musical setting of the second half of Homer’s Odyssey, Il ritorno tells how constancy and virtue are ultimately rewarded, treachery and deception overcome.

Music Director Richard Egarr is joined by Ian Bostridge and an all-star cast in this vivid retelling of Ulysses’s return from war-torn Troy to his homeland, Ithaca, and his wife Penelope.

Please note: we regret that Christine Rice is no longer able to perform in Ulisse. We will announce the confirmed cast in due course.
