About this concert
Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria was one of the most successful operas of its day; premiered during the 1639-1640 carnival season, it was revived just one year later in Venice and performed subsequently as far afield as Bologna. Thereafter, however, it was forgotten until an incomplete manuscript of the original score was published in 1922 and audiences began to rediscover this most moving and tender of Monteverdi’s surviving operas. A musical setting of the second half of Homer’s Odyssey, Il ritorno tells how constancy and virtue are ultimately rewarded, treachery and deception overcome.
The Academy of Ancient Music concludes its three-year cycle of Monteverdi operas with a semi-staged performance of this mature theatrical masterpiece. Ian Bostridge leads an all-star cast in a vivid retelling of Ulysses’s return from war-torn Troy to his homeland, Ithaca, and his wife Penelope.
