Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea
at Festival Enescu, Bucharest
About this concert
While opera as a genre can trace its origins to the work of Jacopo Peri and the humanist classical revivals of the Florentine Camerata, it is only in L'incoronazione di Poppea - Monteverdi's epic drama of lust, loathing, loss and love - that the form takes the shape a modern audience can still recognise today. Gone are tales of mythological heroes and gods, replaced with real historical people and events.
First performed in Venice in 1643 as part of the festive carnival season, Poppea is the story of one woman's will to power and the destructive consequences of her sensational liaison with the Emporer Nero.
